Protect Your Teeth to Fight Signs of Aging: How Bruxism Ages Your Face

 

The connection between dental health and facial aging isn’t mentioned often in dentistry and skincare. In fact, teeth grinding, or bruxism, does gradually alter the architecture of the face. It shortens teeth, enlarges jaw muscles, changes the resting position of the jaw, and contributes to the loss of facial volume that most people associate with aging. For anyone experiencing bruxism — whether they realize it or not — protecting the teeth entails preserving the face.

This post explains the mechanisms behind the connection, what dental and dermatology research actually says about it, and what can be done to preserve both dental structure and facial appearance over time.

How the Face Is Structured — And Why Teeth Matter

The face is a layered structure. The outer layer of skin is supported underneath by fat pads that give the face its youthful volume. Beneath the fat sits the muscular system, which shapes expression and movement. And of course beneath that sit the skull, jaw, and teeth.

The outer appearance of soft-tissue layers depends on underlying bone and dental structure. When the underlying architecture changes — through bone remodeling, tooth loss, or tooth wear — the outer soft tissues morph with it. The skin and fat that were previously supported at one height and angle now sit at a different height and angle. This is why significant tooth loss creates a distinctive "sunken" facial appearance, and why dentures or implants can visibly restore facial fullness. The teeth are load-bearing structures for the face.

This principle was made explicit in a widely referenced 2019 New York Times article on orthodontics and facial aging. Joseph T. Hung, DDS, a dentist quoted in the piece, explained the relationship directly: cheeks and lips are supported by the teeth and jaw beneath them, so the size, shape, and position of the teeth influence the overall shape of the face.

For people with active bruxism, this dependency is especially significant.

What Bruxism Does to the Face Over Time

Grinding and clenching affect structural features that determine how the face ages. The changes are gradual, compounding, and easily missed until they become obvious.

Shortened Teeth and Loss of Vertical Facial Height

Enamel worn down by chronic grinding does not regenerate. Over years and decades, the biting surfaces of teeth flatten and shorten, and the vertical dimension of the bite — the distance between the upper and lower jaws where teeth are in contact — decreases.

The result is subtle but visible. The lower face becomes proportionally shorter. The chin sits closer to the nose. The lips lose the natural support they receive from the underlying teeth and can appear thinner or more inverted. When photographed in profile, the change reads as an aged appearance even in someone whose skin is otherwise well-preserved.

Enlarged Jaw Muscles

The masseter muscles — the powerful chewing muscles that run along the sides of the jaw — respond to bruxism the same way any muscle responds to sustained heavy use: they enlarge. Chronic overuse causes them to hypertrophy, thickening and hardening over months and years.

The cosmetic consequence is a squarer, more angular lower face. For some people this is aesthetically desired; for many others it is not, and it can create asymmetry when grinding is more pronounced on one side than the other. Facial slimming injections targeting the masseter — a growing category within cosmetic medicine — exist specifically to reverse this effect, but the underlying grinding behavior will continue to enlarge the muscle unless separately addressed.

Changes to the Bite and Jaw Position

Chronic grinding can also alter the position of the jaw at rest. Several interventions can slow or reverse the facial effects of bruxism. Some are cosmetic and address the surface consequences; others are structural and address the underlying cause.

Cosmetic Interventions
